Your covering letter should include the following:
- Expression of interest – which position you are applying for (as they may have more than one) and why
- Sell yourself by linking your skills and strengths to their requirements. Clearly outline how they can benefit the employer
- A close, which requests an interview or similar
It should not repeat what is already on the CV, instead you should aim to complement this.
A cover letter also gives you an opportunity to explain the reason for your interest in the new role. This is particularly relevant where your application means a change in direction or career progression, as it gives you the opportunity to position your intentions. If you are between jobs or have employment gaps on your CV, again highlight the reasons for your interest but also be honest about the gaps, perhaps including how you have spent this time if relevant, (e.g. volunteering to gain additional experience)
It can also be an opportunity for you to mention any research you have done in relation to the role and/or organisation and again tailor this to your own experience for maximum impact. This will show commitment to the organisation and again will help you to stand out against the competition. However don’t go overboard, a little mention is often enough.
Keep the tone upbeat and it should neatly fit onto an A4 page. Ideally 3, no more than 4 paragraphs.
